1601 - Two statues have been unveiled in Roos to commemorate the time JRR Tolkien spent in the village while stationed at a nearby camp in 1917. His wife Edith is purported to have danced for him in the woods near the church and this directly inspired some of his writing. The church was used for the speeches and refreshments prior to the unveiling and local ringers rang the bells while guests arrived. This was much appreciated. The following day a peal of 'Lord of the Rings Surprise Major' was rung by members of the Society. Anne Deebank is the first cousin twice removed of Tolkien's wife so it was especially fitting that she was in the band.
